The Death of a Dream Is the Birth of a Promise

September 15, 2020

Here’s a fun fact. Did you know? Construction material costs have increased 135% since this time last year.

Uh…. Okay? So? Who cares?

I do.

Because I was supposed to build a house this month.

And now we’re not.

This is the house we planned for, longed for, dreamed of for months and, well, years—like, since we got married (18 years ago). You’ve heard me whine about it before, like here and here and here. (Are you sensing a theme? Get over it, right?) The house became a focal point of our conversations, our expectations, and our frustrations with one another. Truth be told, the dang house issue turned into an idol. And you know what God does with idols, right?

He smashes them.

And I’m choosing to praise Him for saving us from ourselves.

Bottom line—my husband and I reached the painful conclusion that although the bank said we could afford the build, our heads said it was a stretch. Poor stewardship, really. And isn’t it ironic that just as I’m growing a business focused on good stewardship in ministry, the enemy would try to trip me up in the very area I’m championing for faithfulness. Not ironic, actually. Predictable. And I almost let the freaking devil bring me down.

Dang him.

I’ll spare you the emotional details of our decision to cancel the house build. It was ugly. We are sad. Discouraged. Angry, even.

But here’s one thing I do know.

When God asks us to wait, He always has something better planned at the end of the waiting. We can’t see it yet, we might not even want it if we could see it today. But when it comes to pass, we will know His plan is not and never has been a consolation prize for the death of an old dream. It’s a reward for waiting in obedience.

And I’m holding onto that promise of better things to come.

“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” (Psalm 37:23–24)

So let’s talk, friends. What are you waiting on right now? What desire of your heart is being held hostage? It hurts, I know. And yet God does some of His best work in the waiting. Join me there, hey? Together we can grow in faith, open our eyes to the blessings that are already standing right in front of us, and cast the devil back to hell where he belongs. God is writing the next chapter. And it’s gonna be a GREAT story.

Much love,
Becky
