I don’t even know how it started. Somebody asked the question, and everybody answered. Then we did it again the next night, and the next. Until it became a family habit—a tradition, really—and now, even in the midst of running on two kiddos’ sports and activity schedules, this little game keeps us grounded, connected, and close.
We call it High, Low, Unexpected.
And it’s the best thing that ever happened to the Kopitzke family dinner hour.
It’s super simple. We go around the dinner table and ask everybody to share their highlight of the day (high), worst part of the day (low), and something notable that happened unexpectedly (of course, that’s the unexpected). Lately we’ve added a fourth category as well—funniest thing. Because everybody needs to laugh.
Here’s an example of what goes around:
Mom
High—I had a great conversation at Bible study this morning.
Low—Prophet {our dog} threw up.
Unexpected—I got a card in the mail from a dear friend.
Funniest thing—Dad played a hilarious video for me today on LinkedIn.
Daughter
High—Drama club practice went really well today.
Low—{Bleeping out the name here} was really obnoxious in science class.
Unexpected—Miss S. brought donuts to drama club practice!
Funniest thing—{Protecting the innocent} fell off his chair during drama practice and stayed there on purpose, it was soooooo funny.
See what I’m saying? None of these comments are earth-shattering news, but they give the whole family a clear picture of how the day went, new developments at school or work, and what’s on everybody’s mind and hearts. Plus the questions get the kids thinking critically about their experiences. Often our responses spark conversation in which we ask for more details or hear the backstory or encourage one another. It doesn’t take a ton of time or foresight. Just ask the questions and enjoy the answers.
High, Low, Unexpected, Funniest Thing. It’s my favorite way to check in on my favorite people on a daily basis. I hope you’ll try it, too!
Blessings,
Becky
